Swimming Pools Require Permits and Fencing

As summer approaches, the most common complaints we receive in the building department are regarding non permitted and unsecured swimming pools. The Olmsted Township Zoning Resolution defines a swimming pool as:  An outdoor structure capable of containing in excess of two feet of water at its deepest point and having more than 100 square feet of water surface. If you have a swimming pool in your yard that meets this criteria, that was installed in 1987 or later, you must have a permit and fencing that complies with the Olmsted Township Zoning Resolution. Most inflatable swimming pools fall into this category.
If you have a swimming pool in your yard the Zoning Resolution requires that the pool be completely enclosed with a fence of sturdy construction at least five (5) feet in height. The State of Ohio also has requirements for the location of swimming pools on properties and electrical safety requirements for pumps, filters and heaters. Remember to check with your local homeowner’s association for additional restrictions on pools.  Do not rely on your sales person for important safety information.
Please contact the Olmsted Township Building Department at 440-235-4225 if you have any questions regarding the requirements for installing a swimming pool.
